More than 100 police injured as Gen Z protests turn to rioting in Frankfurt
Police arrested 54 people aged between 13 and 29, Poseck said, according to Reuters and German public broadcaster ARD's tagesschau. The violence followed largely peaceful protests on Saturday in dozens of German cities organised by the campaign group "Gen Z regelt", which called for better education and lower living costs.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said perpetrators would be identified and that he expected severe penalties, Reuters reported. Police said rioters threw petrol bombs, stones and bottles at emergency services.
Why it matters: Frankfurt became the latest flashpoint in youth-led protests across Europe, after weeks of demonstrations and earlier riots in France.
