Bulgaria's acting president Iotova wins runoff, early results show

Exit polls from five agencies put Iotova at between 50.7% and 52.5%, ahead of Gyurov at between 43.4% and 44.7%, bne IntelliNews reported. Gyurov, a former caretaker prime minister, was backed by reformist pro-Western opposition parties, according to AP.

If the result is confirmed, Iotova would become Bulgaria's first elected female head of state, AP reported. Turnout remained low, according to bne IntelliNews.

Why it matters: The two candidates held sharply different views on how Bulgaria should deal with Russia and the war in Ukraine.
