Russian strikes cut power to hundreds of thousands in Ukraine as Oleshky truce ends
Zelenskiy said substations, transformers and power lines were hit in four regions: Dnipro, Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr and Khmelnytskyi, DW reported. A Russian drone attack on the central town of Koziatyn killed at least three people, including a 13-year-old girl, regional officials said.
A six-day local ceasefire around the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky, in the southern Kherson region, was due to expire at 11 p.m. local time on Sunday, and Ukraine's military said it evacuated a further 167 civilians from the area, DW reported. Reuters reported that fighting continued elsewhere along the front line, while Russian authorities reported major damage to an industrial site in the Nizhny Novgorod region after Ukrainian drone attacks.
Why it matters: The strikes deepen pressure on Ukraine's power grid heading into winter, as the war's most significant humanitarian truce comes to an end.
