Congo's Ebola outbreak nears 5,000 deaths, health data show

The latest situation report puts the case fatality rate at 48.6%, with 67 health zones affected across eight of the country's 26 provinces, Xinhua reported, citing the institute's figures published by the health ministry.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention paid tribute to a doctor who died of the disease in the country's conflict-hit east, according to Xinhua.

Why it matters: With more than 10,000 confirmed cases, the outbreak has already led to new travel screening rules, including a US requirement that air travelers sign an Ebola attestation.
