Three killed as two helicopters collide in midair near McMinnville, Oregon

The sheriff's office identified the dead as flight instructor Maddie Aasbo, 22, of Texas; a student pilot from the United Kingdom whose name was not released; and Tyler Delane Sturdevant, 38, of Newberg, OPB reported. The collision happened at about 2 p.m. and involved aircraft operated by Jerry Trimble Helicopters, according to OPB.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating. A nearby highway was closed for the response.

Why it matters: Midair collisions are rare, and the NTSB investigation will look at how two aircraft operating in the same area came into contact.
