Apple to cut Taiwan App Store commission to 26% after Fair Trade Commission probe
The rate covers standard in-app purchases and paid app transactions on the Taiwan storefront of the App Store on iOS and iPadOS, Apple said in a developer notice, adding that developers do not need to sign updated terms to get the lower rate. The Fair Trade Commission (FTC) said the change applies automatically to developers in Taiwan.
The FTC had been investigating whether Apple's restrictions on app developers violated the Fair Trade Act, and Apple offered the cut under a provision that lets an investigation be suspended in exchange for commitments, the commission said. It said it would monitor Apple's compliance and could resume the probe if the commitment is not met, Focus Taiwan reported.
Why it matters: The fee applies to paid apps and in-app purchases sold through Apple's store in Taiwan. The FTC said the new rate matches the one used in markets such as Japan and Brazil.
