Judge bars immigration agents in Southern California from stops based on appearing Latino and working class

The order, issued last week and made public Thursday, covers Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties and exempts ports of entry and checkpoints, according to the Los Angeles Times and City News Service. Frimpong cited what she called "a mountain of evidence" from the plaintiffs, including body-camera footage and text messages, and wrote that the plaintiffs were likely to show violations of the Fourth and Fifth Amendments. She noted the ruling is not a final finding that the government had an unlawful policy.

The administration filed a notice of appeal to the 9th Circuit on Wednesday, the Times reported. The Department of Homeland Security has denied racial profiling and said in a statement that its agents are "focused on protecting the American people." The ACLU of Southern California, which represents the plaintiffs, said it would monitor compliance.

Why it matters: The Supreme Court stayed an earlier order from the same judge last year, and the new injunction, based on new evidence, again limits how federal immigration stops can be carried out in the region.
