Alaska governor orders state inquiry into recruitment of a second 'Dan Sullivan' Senate candidate
Dunleavy said in a post on X that the inquiry would determine "whether criminal charges or civil action are warranted," NBC News reported. The Times report, citing interviews with 12 people and text messages, said Peltola's campaign and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee were involved in recruiting the candidate. A Peltola campaign spokesperson said the campaign "has no involvement with either Sullivan campaign," and the DSCC said it is not involved, according to NBC News.
The second Sullivan has said he entered the race of his own accord, NBC reported. President Trump has called for Peltola and the second candidate to be removed from the ballot and prosecuted, and House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer said his committee is seeking interviews with two people named in the report, according to NBC News.
Why it matters: Alaska's Senate race is one of the closely watched contests in Tuesday's midterm elections, and the state inquiry adds to a federal investigation and a pending Justice Department lawsuit tied to the race, according to NBC News and the Guardian.
