African health ministers hold emergency Ebola meeting as confirmed cases pass 10,000 in four countries
Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya told the virtual meeting the outbreak had a case fatality rate of 48.5% and that 2,727 patients had recovered, Xinhua reported. Cases have been confirmed in Congo, Uganda, Kenya and Nigeria. Kaseya said insecurity, a lack of medical countermeasures and limited funding were making the response harder.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a message, "we are still facing an extremely serious and difficult outbreak." Africa CDC said ahead of the meeting that it would help prepare for a summit of African Union heads of state.
Why it matters: There is no licensed vaccine or specific treatment for the Bundibugyo strain, and Africa CDC has called the outbreak a public health emergency of continental security since May.
