Two high-speed trains collide in central Spain, halting the Madrid-Andalusia line
Two high-speed passenger trains, one run by Renfe and one by Iryo, collided near Urda in Spain's Toledo province on Wednesday morning, and rail infrastructure manager Adif suspended high-speed service between Madrid and Andalusia. The collision happened at 8:54 a.m. local time on the Madrid-Seville route, according to Spain's 112 emergency service and Adif, which described one train running into the other. Emergency officials told the EFE news agency that two carriages fell down an embankment.
Firefighters, civil protection teams, three medical helicopters and two mobile intensive care units were sent to the scene, Spanish media reported. The Associated Press reported that authorities said an unknown number of passengers were injured, and officials had not released casualty figures at the time of writing. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Transport Minister Óscar Puente cancelled their schedules, according to elDiario.es.
Why it matters: Renfe said service is suspended between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia and offered free changes and cancellations for affected trains. Authorities have not said what caused the collision.
