Pentagon tells Congress the Iran war has cost $47.1 billion

About $29 billion of the total is for replacing munitions and $6.1 billion for lost equipment, both still unfunded, while about $11.9 billion covers operating costs, Stars and Stripes reported. The estimate excludes damage to U.S. bases from Iranian attacks, which the Pentagon is still assessing.

The Pentagon is seeking $67 billion in supplemental war funding, but action has stalled with both chambers in recess before the midterms, Stars and Stripes reported. Sen. Jack Reed, the top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said Wednesday that 21 U.S. service members have died in the war.

Why it matters: The figures feed into the supplemental funding request that Congress is expected to take up after the Nov. 3 elections.
