Malaysia seizes AI chips worth 49.5 million ringgit at Kuala Lumpur airport

The servers were found on Oct. 15 during an inspection of a warehouse in the airport's free trade zone, KLIA customs director Aspalila Ag Tuah told reporters, according to Reuters via CNA and Malay Mail. Preliminary investigations found the shipment came from an Asian country under a single air waybill declaring the goods as electronic components and was meant to be re-exported to another Asian country, which requires a permit, she said.

An official from the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry said the chips are classed as dual-use items under the Strategic Trade Act 2010, and that their brands, origin and destination could not be disclosed while investigations continue, Malay Mail reported. Malaysia introduced permit rules last year for the export, transit and transshipment of advanced AI chips, which Reuters said followed U.S. pressure to stem the flow of such chips to China.

Why it matters: The seizures show Malaysian authorities enforcing rules meant to stop the country from being used as a transit point for controlled AI hardware.
