Brazil's Supreme Court bars defeated candidate Flávio Bolsonaro from leaving the country
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered all of Senator Flávio Bolsonaro's Brazilian passports, including his diplomatic one, cancelled, barred him from leaving the country and banned him from contacting lawyer Willer Tomaz, Folha de S.Paulo and the Guardian reported. The order came in an investigation into a suspected money-laundering scheme involving betting companies, and Bolsonaro and Tomaz deny wrongdoing, G1 reported.
Bolsonaro said in a video that federal police served the order as he left a visit to his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is under house arrest. He said he would comply, called the move an attempt to intimidate him and denied planning to flee, Reuters reported, after his brother Eduardo said on a podcast that Flávio should leave Brazil if he lost.
Bolsonaro's party said on Monday night that it recognised the result proclaimed by the electoral court, the Guardian reported, though the senator himself has not conceded and said he would file a case seeking to disqualify Lula's ticket.
Why it matters: The ruling adds legal pressure on the leading figure of Brazil's right just after Lula's narrow win, as the opposition decides how to respond to the result.
