Alex Pretti's parents ask Justice Department to share evidence in his fatal shooting by federal agents

Michael and Susan Pretti told a news conference that they had received no call from federal officials in the 275 days since their son was killed and had not been given the identities of the officers involved, NBC News and the Minnesota Star Tribune reported. "We are here begging for the Department of Justice to do what is right," Susan Pretti said.

A Justice Department spokesperson said contact with families typically comes at a later stage of a case, such as indictment or trial, and that the timing is consistent with how such investigations proceed. Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said earlier this month that federal officials had stopped sharing evidence with state investigators; the evidence is the subject of a federal lawsuit against the Justice Department, the Star Tribune reported.

Why it matters: The dispute leaves unresolved who will investigate and possibly prosecute federal officers in the Minneapolis shootings, and on what evidence.
