Congo's confirmed Ebola cases top 10,000 in its largest outbreak on record
The Bundibugyo-strain outbreak is now the largest and deadliest in Congo's history, surpassing the 2018-2020 epidemic, and the second-largest on record behind the 2014-2016 West African outbreak, which infected more than 28,600 people, Reuters reported. Kenya has reported nine cases, and Nigeria last week became the fourth African country to report a case.
About 80% of new cases are coming from outside the chains of transmission that health authorities are monitoring, Al Jazeera reported, while Africa CDC says at least 95% of cases must come from known contacts for the outbreak to be considered under control.
Why it matters: No vaccine or treatment has been approved for the Bundibugyo species, and the World Health Organization announced the first vaccine clinical trial on Friday.
