Neil Young files $10 million copyright suit over Trump rallies' use of 'Rockin' in the Free World'

The suit cites the song's use at President Donald Trump's Oct. 12 rally in Youngstown, Ohio. It says Young never granted a license. It is Young's second suit over the song: a 2020 case against Trump's campaign was settled, and the new complaint says the campaign then promised not to use the song again without permission, Variety reported.

The White House referred questions to the Republican National Committee, which did not immediately respond, NBC News reported. The claims have not been tested in court.

Why it matters: The case tests whether artists can use copyright law to stop campaigns from playing their music at political events, a long-running dispute between musicians and politicians.
