Jordan arrests three suspects after deadly attack on Karak church

Jordan's Public Security Directorate said security forces found the three suspects hiding in an abandoned house in Karak governorate early Monday. It said the men refused to surrender and opened fire, and that forces returned fire, wounding all three before taking them into custody. No security personnel were hurt, and firearms and ammunition were seized, the directorate said.

Friday's attack on a funeral at a Greek Orthodox church in the village of Hamoud, about 120 km (75 miles) southwest of Amman, killed nine people according to the state news agency Petra, AP and Reuters; Al Jazeera, citing the Health Ministry, put the toll at eight. Authorities have not named the suspects or linked them to any group, and no group has claimed responsibility.

Why it matters: Reuters noted that such violence is highly unusual in Jordan, a US ally, and authorities have described the attackers as extremists.
