New York archdiocese agrees to $800 million settlement with clergy abuse survivors
Archbishop Ronald Hicks told priests in an email on Saturday that an agreement had been reached but not yet signed, NPR and AP reported. AP said the signing is scheduled for the week of Nov. 6, and the deal would end more than seven years of lawsuits.
AP said it is the second-largest settlement involving a Catholic archdiocese in the US, after the Archdiocese of Los Angeles agreed in 2024 to pay $880 million to 1,000 victims.
Why it matters: The deal would resolve one of the largest sets of clergy abuse claims in the country, in an archdiocese of about 2.5 million Catholics.
