Democrats win majorities in both the House and Senate in the midterm elections
Reuters reported that Democrats flipped Senate seats in states including Texas, Kansas and South Carolina for a majority of at least 54-44, and gained at least 28 House seats. Senate races in Alaska and Mississippi had not been called as of Wednesday, Reuters reported. NPR reported that Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan's open Senate seat and that Troy Jackson defeated Sen. Susan Collins in Maine.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who is in line to become the first Black speaker, said Democrats "work for the American people," not the president, Reuters reported.
Why it matters: The new Congress is sworn in on Jan. 3 and will be able to block or advance the president's agenda and nominees; Republicans keep control until then, including over a bill to fund the government past December, Reuters reported.
