Spain identifies 66 of 69 train crash victims, including four Americans

The foreign victims were four U.S. citizens and one each from Argentina, Canada, the Czech Republic, France, Japan, Mexico, Portugal and Tunisia, Spain's victim-identification centre said, according to RTVE and AFP. Missing-person reports for two Australians and one Japanese citizen remain open, and officials are waiting for relatives to arrive to complete the identifications, RTVE and AP reported.

The crash happened on October 28, when a high-speed train hit the rear of another train that had stopped on the line from Madrid to Seville, AP and UPI reported. The cause remains under investigation, according to UPI and AP.

Why it matters: Families of victims from at least 10 countries have waited days for formal identification, which forensic teams have carried out using fingerprints and DNA, RTVE and TodoAlicante reported.
