A24's Elizabeth Holmes documentary edges 'Clayface' at Friday box office

The film about Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, made by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, has grossed $56.85 million in North America since opening on Oct. 16, Variety reported. "Clayface" has made $36.9 million domestically, and Laika's "Wildwood" was third on Friday with $2.39 million, according to Variety and Deadline.

Why it matters: A documentary leading a Friday box office against a studio superhero release is unusual, and A24 is submitting the film for best picture and other Academy Award categories, Variety reported.
