Texas grand jury indicts ICE officer accused of striking a man with his vehicle in Houston
Prosecutors allege Morales struck Miguel Parra-Hernandez with his vehicle, breaking his leg, NBC News reported. Teare played body-camera video at a news conference. The charge is a second-degree felony punishable by 2 to 20 years in prison.
ICE called the case "a political stunt" and said local officials lack authority to prosecute federal officers acting in their duties, according to NBC News. NBC reported it is the first indictment of an immigration agent in Texas.
Why it matters: The case tests whether state prosecutors can bring charges against federal immigration officers over on-duty conduct, an authority ICE says local officials do not have.
