Amazon MGM Studios says it will double investment in original Japanese films and series
Marini did not give a figure. He said the slate is made mainly for Japanese audiences but is meant to travel globally, and that Amazon is working with partners including Toho, TV Tokyo, Wowow, Credeus and South Korea's Studio Dragon, according to Deadline.
Titles in the pipeline include a live-action series based on the light novels "The Apothecary Diaries," starring Mana Ashida and co-produced with Toho, set for Prime Video in 2028, Screen reported. "We're going to double our investment to reach an international standard," Marini said, according to Deadline.
Why it matters: Global streamers are competing for Japanese stories such as manga and light novels, and the plan signals a bigger push by Amazon into original Japanese production rather than licensing.
