Four Corners flooding leaves one dead as sewage risks and power outages slow recovery
A woman was swept away Saturday when a family tried to drive across a flooded arroyo in Santa Fe, and she was found dead about a mile away, the county sheriff's office said, according to AP. The same storms produced a tornado that damaged homes in Santa Fe on Saturday night.
Along the San Juan River, residents of Bluff, Utah, were allowed to return Monday morning after weekend evacuations, while many people in the Farmington area of New Mexico remained evacuated and hundreds were without power, AP reported. Officials warned that floodwater may carry raw sewage and chemicals; the New Mexico governor's office said untreated wastewater from a Bloomfield treatment plant flowed into the river. Colorado Gov. Jared Polis declared a disaster emergency in a dozen counties, the Deseret News reported.
Why it matters: New Mexico's congressional delegation has asked President Donald Trump for a federal emergency declaration to release aid, and flood warnings remain in parts of Colorado, New Mexico and Utah with more storms expected later this week, according to the National Weather Service.
