Xi opens four-day Communist Party plenum focused on discipline and governance
About 300 members of the Communist Party's Central Committee began a closed-door meeting in Beijing on Monday, with President Xi Jinping presenting a draft decision on "full and rigorous Party self-governance," state news agency Xinhua reported. The session runs from October 26 to 29 and is the fifth plenum since the current Central Committee was formed in 2022.
State media said the meeting would focus on tightening discipline within the party, including anti-corruption measures, the BBC and Reuters reported. A summary of decisions is usually made public after the meeting.
Why it matters: The plenum comes about a year before the next party congress in 2027, where a new Central Committee will be appointed.
